Attendance and Engagement
The University has an Attendance and Engagement Policy (PDF, 167.9KB) which includes specific arrangements for monitoring your engagement and attendance as a student on a Student/Tier 4 visa.
This is because UK Visas and Immigration require us to check your attendance and engagement with your course. If you have been absent from your studies without permission or have not been engaging sufficiently, we are obligated to withdraw sponsorship of your visa.
This occurs if you have missed a number of consecutive contact points or have been absent from, or not engaging with your studies for a period. This would result in withdrawal for non-engagement and the University would stop sponsoring your Student visa. Watch the video above for more information about why ‘Attendance Matters’.
Your responsibilities
It’s important that you are aware of your responsibilities in relation to attendance and your Student or Tier 4 visa. You need to:
- Attend your taught sessions regularly, in person and maintain a high level of engagement where lectures are delivered online.
You must engage fully with your studies
- You must attend all lectures, seminars and all other study sessions
- You must submit all coursework and attend all examinations and assessments
- If you are studying a PhD or Doctorate course, you must attend monthly supervision meetings
- If you are working on your dissertation or major project, you must engage with your supervisor
- If you are on a work placement, you must attend your work placement in full and notify your employer if you will be absent for any reason. The University will contact your employer every month to check your attendance.
- Read the user guidance for using Study Goal.
- Log into Study Goal and record your attendance at all seminars and lectures when the tutor has released the Study Goal code.
- Ask a Student Support Adviser or your Academic Adviser for help and advice if you are struggling to engage with your studies. Respond promptly to emails regarding your attendance or engagement.
- If you are impacted by exceptional circumstances and unable to attend university for more than 2 days please complete an authorised absence request form.
Using Study Goal to record your attendance
- The University uses Learning Analytics to monitor engagement and attendance, as well as reviewing engagement with dissertation/large project supervision and assignment submission. To record attendance, we use a web-based platform called Study Goal. Find out more about Study Goal and how to use to it.
Studying online
- Your Student visa does not permit you to study remotely via online learning.
- You are required to attend all timetabled face to face sessions.
- Online resources should be used to support your learning and not as a replacement for attending sessions in person.
- You will be considered absent from your studies if you only study using our online resources.
