Cost of living support for students

We know that many of our students and their families are being affected by the current cost of living, so we’ve put together a range of support to help.

Student discount and low/no cost activities

  • SHUcard and NUS card: This will give you lots of discounts with local and national businesses. Sign up to other schemes like UNiDAYS or TOTUM for even more offers.
  • Free sport sessions: Join GoGlobal’s fortnightly sport sessions, enjoy a game of football, volleyball, badminton and much more.
  • Give it a go: Ran by Hallam Students’ Union, try something new for a low or no cost.

Food

  • Breakfast offer: Free porridge or cereal when you buy a hot drink from 8.30am - 10.30am at Hallam Central and The Granary.
  • Lunch offer: Buy a street food lunch box from £2.50 at Hallam Central and The Granary.
  • Hallam Eat App: Download the app to benefit from exclusive offers and discounts including a £3.40 meal deal.
  • Discount when you bring your own cup: Receive a 40p discount when buying a tea or coffee.
  • Hot water and microwave stations: Available at seven locations across campus.

Hallam Students' Union

The Students’ Union Cost of living shop can be found inside the Hubs. You can find:

  • Community Fridge: Free food donated by local retailers. Check @HallamSU Instagram stories for the latest deliveries.
  • Swap Shop: Trade unwanted clothing for something new or receive a voucher for future use.
  • Book Swap: Exchange old books for new ones from our bookshelf..
  • Free sanitary products: Access free menstrual products, condoms and pregnancy tests.

Travel

  • Free shuttle bus: Available on weekdays throughout term-time for students with a SHUcard, running from outside the Hubs to Collegiate Campus.
  • Free city centre travel: You can catch the Sheffield Connect 1 and 2 to travel around the city centre for free. View route information.
  • Discounted bus travel: If you’re aged 18-21 you can benefit from £1.50 bus travel on selected services. With a pass, single bus and tram fares in South Yorkshire have been capped, so you'll pay a maximum of £2 for any one-way journey. 

Learning

  • Library fines have been suspended, so you’ll no longer incur any late fees.
  • Free e-textbooks: Access the 100 e-textbooks for free, so you don’t have to buy core textbooks.
  • Blackbullion: Use this free tool to take control of your finances and make better financial decisions.
  • Office 365 Education: As a Hallam student you can access Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Microsoft Teams for free. Just use your university email address to sign in.

Sport and fitness

  • Sport Hardship Fund in conjunction with our Students’ Union.
  • We've frozen Team Hallam membership fees and you can now split your payment into two instalments.
