Work-life balance

Sheffield Hallam University is committed to supporting employees to achieve a healthy balance between their work and personal lives and we offer a range of benefits to support this.

Annual leave

We offer excellent annual leave provisions. As well as your annual leave and the eight standard UK bank holidays, you also get up to six extra days each year for extended University closure around some UK public/holidays.

For most people that means the SUESday which is the Tuesday off after each bank holiday Monday (with the exception of May Day) and extended time off over the Christmas period. For example, most people will break up for Christmas 2020 on Thursday 24th December and won’t return to work until Monday 4th January 2021.

Annual leave is 25 days for administrative, technical and campus support employees, 30 days for senior professional services employees and 35 days for academics and senior academics.

All of this is calculated on a pro rata basis if you work part-time.

Additional annual leave

Staff also have the option to request up to 15 days unpaid leave per year in addition to the standard entitlement (pro rata for part time employees).

Flexible working

Where possible we operate a number of flexible working schemes including job-shares, flexible working hours and part-time roles.

Career break

We recognise that some employees may wish or need to take an extended period of unpaid time away from work for a variety of personal reasons, during the course of their employment. The University will consider career break applications from all University employees subject to certain conditions.

Other leave

We also operate other leave policies including Time Off (which includes Jury Service, leave for services in non-regular forces), volunteering to be a School Governor and unpaid parental leave.

Family-friendly benefits

Should you have family or caring responsibilities, we have a generous package of family-friendly policies that provide for flexible working, shared parental leave, enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption leave depending on your length of service and leave for family emergencies.

Childcare

We have a 74-place on-site registered nursery run by qualified and experienced staff providing childcare for children aged 6 months to 5 years.

Our nursery means you can continue working secure in the knowledge that your children are being cared for in a safe, happy, relaxed and stimulating environment. For more information, please see our Nursery pages.

Childcare Voucher Scheme

Tax and National Insurance savings can be made by paying for your childcare arrangements through the University payroll and our third-party provider Computershare. Your account can be managed online and changed according to your needs. This scheme is only open to existing Computershare members.
