We’re committed to supporting all our people to achieve a healthy balance between their work and personal lives.
Hybrid working
While campus-based work offers many benefits for students and staff, we know our diverse community needs different things to perform at their best.
We support a hybrid working approach, with some time working remotely and some on campus, for most jobs.
Where hybrid working is possible, managers will consider what works best for you, the wider team and the business. There are many different jobs and teams across the University, so there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ approach.
The majority of Professional Services staff with office-based jobs work two days a week on campus, with a minimum of one day required. For academic staff, hybrid working arrangements are scheduled around student-facing time and business activity.
Flexibility and staff wellbeing are at the heart of our approach, with the campus remaining the hub of our community.
Annual leave
Annual leave is 25 days for administrative, technical and campus support employees, 30 days for senior professional services employees and 35 days for academics and senior academics (pro rata if you work part time).
As well as your annual leave and the eight standard UK bank holidays, you’ll get around five extra days per year for our extended closure after some UK public holidays (known as ‘SHU Tuesdays’), as well as over Christmas.
Other leave benefits
Our other leave benefits include:
- The option to request up to 15 days additional unpaid leave per year (pro rata if you work part time)
- Flexible-working schemes including job-shares, flexible hours, and part-time jobs
- Career breaks – an extended period of unpaid time away from work (subject to approval)
- Support for volunteering with time off during normal working hours
Family-friendly benefits
Our Hallam nurseries provide care for children aged 6 months to 5 years in a safe, happy and stimulating environment.
If you have family or caring responsibilities, you can benefit from our family-friendly policies including flexible working, shared parental leave, enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption leave (depending on length of service) and leave for family emergencies.
