English

Our work covers a wide portfolio of Literature, Language and Creative Writing. We're interested in representations and conceptualisations of key issues like gender and sexuality, class, race, and ability/disability; the activities of reading communities and their political, national and religious identities; the possibilities of new kinds of textuality (including through multimodality and digital technologies); and the critical conceptualisation of our relationships with the environment in a time of climate crisis.

We have five main themes:

  • Early Modern Literary Studies
  • Modern Literature
  • Stylistics
  • Language, Literacy and Social Structure
  • Contemporary Creativity

History

We specialise in modern and contemporary history from the late eighteenth century. Our vision is a global one, and we make distinctive contributions in six key areas:

  • Transnational histories and imperial encounters
  • War, violence and society
  • Labour and social movements
  • Women, gender and sexuality
  • Race and ethnicity
  • Business and finance

Film and Performance

We have three main research groups:

  • Film and television
  • Theatre and performance
  • Scriptwriting for stage and screen

We specialise in American, British and Irish, East Asian and European cinemas, adaptation, documentary, horror and television; and in applied theatre, contemporary British playwriting, site-based performance, and performance and phenomenology. Several members of the team engage with practice-as-research methodologies, including scriptwriting.
