Travelling to Practice Based Learning Placement
We recognise that many of our students will need to travel to their Practice Based Learning placement. Wherever possible we will not expect students to travel for longer than 2 hours to a placement.
Please see guidance on Travel information in the Placement Preparation section of this site.
Please also refer to the following guidance on the Student Guidance page in the Policy Library section of this website:
- Travelling to and from placement safely
- Use of student's own vehicle on placement policy

Claiming Practice Based Learning Placement Associated (Travel and Accommodation) Expenses
Please Note: Degree apprenticeship students are not entitled to claim travel and accommodation expenses. Please refer to your own Trust or employer for advice.
“The NHS are changing the way you claim for travel and accommodation expenses.
Since Tuesday 7th January 2025, there has been a quicker and easier way to claim back the travel and dual accommodation expenses (TDAE) you incur during placements. You will be able to upload your evidence and submit your expense claims entirely online, all through your NHS Learning Support Fund account. As a result, the previous method of sending your paper (downloaded) forms to the Health Placements team will no longer be accepted or processed. You shall be automatically referred to the NHS online portal by one of the team.
The new system will allow you to track your applications, so you can easily check their progress. This also means you don’t need to print off any more forms. The changes will automatically happen in your account.
The process is straightforward and easy to follow. You can find out more about TDAE and the current rates on the NHS Business Services Authority website - https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/nhs-learning-support-fund-lsf/travel-and-dual-accommodation-expenses-tdae
If you have any questions in regards to this change or logging into your account or a logged claim in the NHS portal you may still email the Health Placements Support Team at – HWLSPlacementsAdmin@shu.ac.uk”
