SYMCA Projects

We are continuously collaborating with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to enhance our local Sheffield community. This collaboration includes research into safer active travel, promoting our local environment, and improving the public experiences of our city. Our student projects with SYMCA demonstrate our ongoing commitment to our local community.

Digital Media Futures

Our BA (Hons) Digital Media Production students aimed to make the Sheffield Interchange more engaging through interactive designs and screen-based prototypes. They utilised coding, creative design, and problem-solving skills to fulfil their brief, and the work of student Fraser Stenton was chosen to be displayed on the digital screens within the interchange space.

Where Am I Going?

In response to the brief 'Where Am I Going?', BA (Hons) Photography students documented their journeys in and around the local area. They were asked to explore their emotional, cultural, and personal connections to the area, and their experiences within it, through the medium of black-and-white film photographs. The work was later exhibited in the interchange space.

Modular Type Exhibition

BA (Hons) Graphic Design students installed a captivating display of modular type on the window spaces of Sheffield Interchange. They used transparent vinyl in a variety of bright, bold colours to create an engaging exhibition and creatively used the light reflecting onto the walkways. The project enhanced the interchange space, improving the experience for those passing through.

From Insight to Action

Our BA (Hons) Product Design students worked in small groups to create research-informed designs that would increase Active Travel in Sheffield. They proposed solutions ranging from rewards-based app systems to bike storage facilities aimed at reducing bike theft. These proposals were subsequently used to inform and support multi-million-pound projects throughout the city.

Criminology Research

Our BA (Hons) Criminology students collaborated with SYMCA to study real-world issues preventing people in Sheffield from choosing Active Travel. They used their research to create a poster showcasing their main findings and recommendations for SYMCA to address these issues.
