Teacher Education Scholarships and Bursaries

Financial support for students studying certain teacher education courses.

All Teacher Education Bursaries  have now been set up for new starters for the 2024/25 academic year.  If you have not been contacted by the Student Funding team, we do not believe you are eligible for a bursary.  However, if you think that you are eligible, please let us know by contacting Hallam Help.

Overview

If you’re studying to become a teacher you may be eligible for a scholarship funded by an independent professional body or a bursary funded by the Department for Education.

You cannot receive both a scholarship and a bursary.

What you could receive

The funding available depends on the subject you are studying to teach, the qualification of your course, and your highest relevant academic qualification.  Please note, there are no bursaries payable on PGCE Primary Education courses.

Scholarships and bursaries are normally paid over 10 equal monthly instalments from October to July.

Our terms and conditions documents below explain who is eligible and what eligible students can expect to receive.

SHU students who are not eligible for a teacher education scholarship or bursary may be able to apply for the Student Success Scholarship.

If you receive benefits and/or any other financial support, it is your responsibility to check whether receiving an award will affect your entitlement(s)/payments.

How to apply

Bursaries

You do not need to apply for a bursary. However, you must complete a claim form once you have started your course.

Scholarships

If you would like to be considered for a scholarship, you must apply to the appropriate scholarship provider. Visit the Get into Teaching funding page to find out how and when to apply.

If your scholarship application is successful, we will ask you to complete a claim form once you have started your course.  You will need to upload your scholarship confirmation.

If your scholarship application is unsuccessful, you can claim the standard bursary for your course, if you are eligible.

How and when to claim

Once you are fully enrolled and your course has started, we will invite you to complete a claim form. This form will ask you to upload evidence that includes:

  • Photo ID
  • Qualification certificates

If you think that you are eligible for a scholarship or a bursary but have not heard from us by the end of October: SHU students, please contact Hallam Help.  UWE Bristol students, please email EDU.SPS@uwe.ac.uk.

Please note, bursaries for SCITT students are awarded and arranged by the SCITT provider.  Any bursary or payment enquiries should be directed to your SCITT provider.

What happens next

We will aim to contact you within three weeks of you submitting your claim to confirm your payment dates and amounts, if eligible.
