We may ask you to set up consent so that we can speak to Student Finance England (SFE) on your behalf. We may ask you to do this before a Student Funding appointment, or if you have a complex student loan enquiry.
To do this:
- Contact SFE to set up consent, you can do this online or over the phone.
- Tell us your consent to share information by completely a short form.
If you do not tell us your consent to share information we will not be able to speak to SFE on your behalf, we may not be able to fully support you, and you may need to book another appointment. Therefore, it is important to complete the consent to share form at the bottom of this page before your appointment.
1. Contact Student Finance England to give consent
What information will you need
When setting up consent online or over the phone, you will need to provide the following information:
- your SFE Customer Reference Number,
- the organisation you want to give permission to – say ‘Sheffield Hallam University’,
- what our relationship is to you – say ‘higher education provider’,
- a password – this must be different to your SFE account login, and
- the date you want consent to be valid until – we recommend that you do this for at least two months and no more than six months.
How to give consent online
It may take up to three working days for this to be processed and added to your SFE record. If your appointment is due to take place within the next three working days, you must give consent over the phone.
To give consent online:
- go to your SFE online account, and
- select the ‘share your student finance information’ option.
How to give consent over the phone
Phone Student Finance England on 0300 100 0607 (or use text relay, if you cannot hear or speak on the phone, by calling 18001 then 0300 100 0607) and select the options that best match your current situation (‘still to apply’ or ‘existing loans’ for example).
This information will be added to your SFE record immediately.

- whether you set up consent online or over the phone,
- the password you have set up, and
- how long you have given us consent for.
