Physical disabilities and long-term medical conditions

If you have a physical disability or medical condition that has lasted, or is likely to last, for 12 months or more, there is support available. This could include, but is not limited to, the following conditions:

  • arthritis
  • cerebral palsy
  • chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Crohn's disease
  • epilepsy
  • fibromyalgia
  • POTS
  • scoliosis
  • long Covid

If you are unsure whether you can receive support, please contact us. If your condition has lasted or is likely to last less than 12 months, contact your Student Support Adviser for support during your studies.

Support offered

We will work with you to understand how your disability affects your studies and how we can support you as a learner. We can provide support for lectures and seminars, assignments and exams.
Your Disability Adviser will discuss your needs with you and provide support through a learning contract.

Support can include:

  • adjustments to coursework, including presentations and practical work
  • exam support such as rest breaks
  • timetabling in accessible teaching spaces.

We can support you to apply for funded support, such as:

  • ergonomic furniture
  • equipment and assistive software to support notetaking, reading, writing and planning.

Evidence requirements

Before we can put support in place, you will need to provide evidence of your disability in the form of a letter from your GP, doctor, consultant or a hospital letter. The letter should include:

  • your diagnosis
  • the duration of the symptoms
  • details, where appropriate, of any medication and any reported side affects
  • the impact of the condition on your studies

If you do not already have medical evidence we recommend taking this disability evidence form (PDF, 255KB) to your GP.
