Make sure that the file title does not include any special characters. Publish the file by submitting and approving it in the ‘publish’ tab of the ribbon.

Return to the content editor and open the rich text editor for the content/page where you want to insert your file.

Put your cursor where you want your file to be in your text and ‘insert Sitecore link’ icon.

Navigate to the file in the media library, select it and click ‘insert.’

Insert link dialogue box with uploaded file selected

The file title will appear as a link so make sure that it clearly defines the content of the document. Alternatively, if you want to insert the file link from an existing piece of copy, highlight the relevant text before clicking the ‘insert Sitecore link.’

Once the link has been added Sitecore will automatically add the filesize and file type, this is also for accessibility purposes so that the visitor is aware what they are clicking on. For example a link would be shown as: Your document link (PDF, 1.9MB).
