The Doctorate in Education (EdD) is suitable for those investigating and seeking to contribute to knowledge and practice in sectors including further and higher education, adult education, community education, and settings such as schools, and early years settings.
How you learn
In the first two years of this course, you will work on four modules, each of which addresses particular areas of knowledge and skill in preparation for the final thesis. However, much of the work for your degree will be carried out independently, and you will need the initiative, motivation and commitment to succeed.
Your supervisory team will include a Director of Studies and a second supervisor with expertise and interest in your research area. Your supervisors will help you to define your research programme, identify training, and provide direction while encouraging you to develop as an independent researcher.

Networking opportunities
As a postgraduate researcher you will become part of the vibrant research community at Sheffield Hallam. Our education postgraduate research forum gives you the chance to meet up with other postgraduate researchers to network, to learn about and reflect on experiences of doctoral research, to discuss methodology and the practicalities of research. The forum complements sessions run by the Sheffield Hallam University Doctoral School and the College of Social Sciences and Arts Graduate School. The Doctoral School is a hub for researcher training, development and networking. There is an annual Doctoral Research conference run by and for education students and a wider college research conference at which postgraduate researchers are encouraged to present work in progress.
The SIoE is part of the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership and doctoral researchers benefit from the extended networking opportunities it provides. In addition, the SIoE seminar series provides opportunities to share research and exchange ideas with researchers across the SIOE and beyond.
