How you learn

This course is designed for you to study key technical areas while gaining experience as a professional engineer from day one – developing technical and professional skills from the very beginning. This lays the foundation for a course of study that can be designed to meet your specific needs, whether for a particular career or in academia.

You’ll learn from staff who are experts in the field and engaged in active research. Graduates of this course are in demand locally, nationally and globally, giving you an opportunity to follow your chosen career anywhere in the world.

You learn through:

  • Core technical modules
  • Project-based activities
  • Laboratory work
  • Workshops
  • Tutorial examples
  • An optional placement
  • Careers events
  • Site visits

Key themes

You’ll study key technical areas including digital electronics, electrical energy systems, communication engineering, system on chip (SoC) design and digital signal processing (DSP). You’ll also have the option to select from specialist modules in areas including robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).

Industry-standard approaches and lab equipment are used in these modules, and tutorial examples use realistic and relevant problems to enhance your understanding of contemporary requirements.

As well as improving your technical skills and knowledge, we also focus on building wider professional skills, such as planning, research techniques and promoting innovation.

Course support

You’ll be supported in your learning journey towards highly skilled, graduate-level employment. This includes:

  • Access to specialist support services to help with your personal, academic and career development.
  • Access to our Skills Centre with one-on-ones, webinars and online resources, where you can get help with planning and structuring your assignments.

Applied learning

Live projects

Throughout the course, you’ll engage in exciting live projects, applying your knowledge and skills to real-world scenarios, design challenges and problem-solving tasks.

Previous live projects have included developing a respiration monitor – requiring analogue and digital electronic design, microprocessor and sensor integration, software development, wireless communication, signal processing and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling.

You’ll also gain experience in numerical modelling of free space optical communication systems. This requires building an understanding of digital communication, optical wireless communication and digital signal processing.

Work placements

You’ll have the opportunity to go on a work placement for up to 12 months as part of the course. You’ll be supported in finding placements and you’d apply for a vacancy as you would a job. We can also support you with CV writing, interview skills and applications.

Networking opportunities

You’ll be able to attend scheduled events across the academic year – meeting industry partners, employers, researchers and alumni. Past events have included the alumni careers panel, careers fair, winter research poster event, SHU Racing launch and EngFest.

Field trips

You’ll be able to observe relevant industry processes through site visits. Previous trips have included tours of power stations, automotive plants and advanced manufacturing industries.

Future careers

In our engineering postgraduate programme, a primary motivation for Masters-level study is enhancing your employability with higher-level technical knowledge and personal skills.

The course prepares you for a career primarily in electrical and electrical engineering, alongside related careers, such as:

  • Electronic or electrical design engineering
  • Electronic or electrical test engineering
  • Electronic or electrical installation engineering
  • Research and development
  • Control engineering
  • Telecommunications engineering
  • Digital signal processing engineering
  • Field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) design engineering
