How you learn

All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on the application of knowledge. You’ll engage with the Hallam community and beyond, collaborating with experts in your areas of interest, and being challenged to think in new ways – all in a supportive environment in which you can thrive.

This course builds your fundamental knowledge by learning how an organisation structures itself around functional areas and digital technologies. You’ll develop project management skills – from different planning frameworks like Agile and SCRUM, to the kinds of enterprise system projects they’re most suited to. You’ll also develop your professional responsibility and understanding of accountability in IT projects.

We’ll explore interactive case studies in different modules, critically evaluating company performance from various theoretical levels of analysis, accompanied by innovative methodologies.

Your dissertation project gives you an opportunity to further tailor your course by specialising in a particular area of the discipline, supported by a supervisor. In preparation you’ll also develop your research, academic writing and business reporting skills.

You learn through:

  • Lectures
  • Tutorials and workshops
  • Flipped-classroom, project-based learning
  • Enquiry-based learning
  • Problem-solving activities
  • Practical projects
  • Teamwork
  • Reports
  • Demonstrations
  • Discussions
  • Presentations
  • Structured walk-throughs

Key themes

You’ll explore functional areas including human resource, accounting and finance, material management and production planning. Through business process re-engineering (BPR), you’ll learn how to evaluate and optimise those functional areas to maximise process efficiencies – through better design, implementation, automation, and integration enabled by digital technologies.

You’ll use industry-based case studies to analyse enterprise management projects using tools such as SAP S/4 HANA. Here you’ll learn how to view business architecture and transformation from different perspectives – analysing key layers of an organisation’s strategy, culture, infrastructure, digital platforms and data modelling. You’ll also learn how to identify areas of digital transformation through the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, Blockchain and generative AI – plus their applications to real-world tasks.

Crucially the course develops professional skills through both academic and practical learning, preparing you to lead transformational projects that create sustainable competitive advantages.

Entry requirements

All students

Normally you need

• a good honours degree which includes significant aspects of IT, typically 2.2 or above, from a UK university or equivalent from overseas university

We will also consider applicants do not meet these academic criteria but who have several years' experience in expert, managerial or senior IT roles. You may also be able to claim credit points which can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your qualification at Sheffield Hallam.

Overseas applicants from countries whose first language is not English must normally produce evidence of competence in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 with 5.5 in all skills (or equivalent) is the standard for non-native speakers of English. If your English language skill is currently below an IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills we recommend you consider a Sheffield Hallam University Pre-sessional English course which will enable you to achieve an equivalent English level.

Additional information for EU/International students

If you are an International or non-UK European student, you can find out more about the country specific qualifications we accept on our international qualifications page.
