Was the Past More Sustainable?

Project Director: Aimee Ambrose
Project Duration: 2023-2024

This grant will enable the research team, who are all involved in historical research into contemporary sustainability challenges, to produce a book for a popular audience, which engages with the question: Was the past more sustainable? We will consider this question in relation to the following topics, with a chapter dedicated to each:

  • Heating
  • Active travel
  • Waste
  • Air quality
  • Food
  • Christmas

We will also produce briefing documents on three of these topics which demonstrate how environmental movements originating in South Yorkshire went on to change the course of history. In the longer term, we hope these briefings will form the basis of events or exhibitions.

The project team also includes Mia Rafalowicz-Campbell (Sheffield Hallam University) and Dr Henry Irving (Leeds Beckett University).
