Decarbonisation solutions for off grid communities

Project Director: Aimee Ambrose
Project Duration: 2023-2024

The project focuses on homes that are ‘off grid’ (no electricity and / or gas connection) in the North of England. The clients are Northern Powergrid (electricity infrastructure) and Northern Gas Network (gas infrastructure).

The overarching purpose of the research is to understand the realities and practicalities of decarbonising off grid properties (and groups of properties) and the likely reception from and impacts on occupants. Decarbonisation of off grid properties is essential to meet national carbon reduction targets and to ensure that off grid households do not become stranded on increasingly niche and expensive fossil fuels. Whole community solutions will ideally be identified rather than property by property approaches. The approaches developed will be viable, effective and acceptable and appealing to occupants.
