About this event
Data can be of huge value to a business, and a key factor in extracting that value is how the data can be visualised to create understanding and impact.
Join us at our breakfast event on 16th June to hear Simon Choppin and David Barrett share their knowledge in the use of data visualisation tools applied to contract research and consultancy projects in sport, health and wellbeing.
Simon and David are from the Sports Engineering and Sports Industries research groups respectively. They have expertise using Microsoft Power BI, Tableaux, Excel, and GiS in working with clients to help manage, analyse, and present their data.
This event will provide an opportunity to network with other businesses in your sector, see the state-of-the-art facilities at our Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, and explore how collaborating with the university can help you drive growth in your business.
You’ll also find out more about the potential funding opportunities available to SMEs in and around the Sheffield City Region to support innovative idea development, including the Sheffield Innovation Programme and Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme.
Provisional programme:
- How data visualisation methods are applied to sport, health and wellbeing.
- How SERG and AWRC work with the region’s SMEs to drive business growth through evaluation, testing, and validation of new ideas.
Who should attend?
This event should be primarily of interest to SMEs in and around the Sheffield City Region that work in sport, wellbeing and health sectors. However, SMEs from other sectors are of course welcome, given that data visualisation has a wide application.

Additional information:
The Sports Engineering Research Group (SERG) is the world's largest academic group in sports engineering and an internationally renowned centre of excellence for research and knowledge transfer. The group's work is based on four research themes: applied computing, biomechanics, design engineering, and active travel. In each area, researchers develop fundamental knowledge and deliver applied solutions to enhance athletic performance, reduce injury, and promote physical activity. SERG provides support to a broad range of organisations in which human movement measurement, data management, and data visualisation plays a role in the delivery of their business.
In 2019, SERG evolved and formed the foundational pillar of the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC). The AWRC is a world‐leading £15.7 million research centre funded by the UK Department of Health, Sheffield Hallam University and with support by the European Social Fund. The AWRC co‐creates, evaluates, and exploits innovations in sport, physical activity and health with commercial and non‐commercial partners.
The Sport Industry Research Group is a team of full-time researchers who apply principles of economics, management, and social science to generate new knowledge about the sport and leisure industries. They are outward looking and pride themselves in doing policy-relevant research that delivers actionable insights for their clients. They do this by applying their extensive skill set in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research to meet the needs of the outside world. Their research has pioneered the use of economics in sport, notably: calculating the value of sport to the economy; measuring the economic impact of major sports events, and valuing the wider social impacts achieved by sport.
Places are limited to 25 persons, and we will operate a first-come-first-served basis. If demand is high for places, we will consider running the event again.
Breakfast refreshments & catering will be provided at the event. If you have any dietary requirements, please either let us know upon registration or email innovation@shu.ac.uk.
