The Institute of Industry and Innovation at Sheffield Hallam University intends to appoint up to 14 Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA’s) on a 3.5 year fixed-term studentship from October 2021 and include Home tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,285.

Graduate Teaching Assistants undertake certain teaching duties associated with the student experience, in addition to working towards a PhD qualification.

As a minimum, applicants should possess a 1st or 2.1 Honours degree in a related discipline. A Master’s degree in a relevant subject area would be an advantage.

Closing date: 12 noon on 30th October 2021

For these studentships, the PhD students will be registered for a PhD, alongside which they will contribute to up to 180 hours of support for research or teaching related activity per academic year. This activity forms part of the scholarship award and there is no additional payment for it.

Currently enrolled doctoral students are not eligible to apply.

The start date for the studentship will be February 2022.

• Multimodal imaging for detection of counterfeits and document forgery
• Lipidomic and Antibiotic Resistance Characterisation of Activated Sludge Wastewater Reactors

TheNational Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering (NCEFE)

• Pulses for health and environment: Fava bean processing, molecular identification and analysis
  

Application Guidance

Applicants must submit the following as part of their formal application:

1. Formal application to University
2. Research Proposal (1,500 words max, excluding references) (this is a section in the application form which can be submitted as a separate document): the proposal should be tailored to the advertised project you are applying for. The proposal will be utilised to assess your ability to research the field of interest and propose a project plan.
3. A Cover letter detailing which project you are applying to and why you are interested in this project. Please also identify potential areas you can contribute to within the teaching departments dependant on the positioning of the project application as follows:

• Biomolecular sciences Research Centre – Department of Biosciences and Chemistry
• NCEFE - Department of Engineering and Maths and/or Department of Service Sector Management (specifically within Food and Nutrition)

1. Two letters of reference, one must be from an academic and both must be dated within the last 2 years. (If you are not able to collate these by the application deadline please include referee details and these can follow afterwards).
2. Copy of the highest degree certificate (If available)
3. Non-UK applicants must submit IELTs results taken in the last two years and a copy of their passport. An overall IELTS score of 7.0 or above, with at least 6.5 in each component.

Selection process

Interviews will take place in November 2021.

Applicants are required to give a 10 minute presentation followed by an interview. Interview panel members will include the Head of Research Degrees for the Institute or the Postgraduate Research Tutor for local area, the Head of Research for the disciplinary area the prospective Director of Studies and a representative from the teaching department.

Due to COVID restrictions interviews will be conducted online.

Fees section

The GTA studentships are for three and a half years, subject to satisfactory progress, and will include full Home tuition fees and an annual stipend at UKRI rates (currently : £15,609).

International applicants please note that the bursary will cover only the Home fee rate. The shortfall between the Home and Overseas fee must be covered by the student for the 3.5 year duration of the studentship. We also have a mandatory English language requirement of IELTS 7, or equivalent language qualification. This qualification should have been taken within the last two years, with a score of at least 6.5 in all areas.
