The Golden Spatula is a prize awarded in The Netherlands for the best chemistry thesis of Bachelor degree.

Gino Groeneveld from the University of Amsterdam spent 5 months working under Simona Francese's supervision and was sponsored by the Netherlands Forensic Institute from February 2015 to June 2015 on his thesis project entitled Detection of Drugs and Their Metabolites in Fingerprints Using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS).

Competing against over 30 submissions, Gino won first prize (€1000) for his thesis. He was one of the three students selected for the award ceremony and managed to come through as the winner.
