Marney Walker: How can design support the expression of personal aesthetic preferences in dementia?

Date of Study: 2019 - 2023

Although dementia may affect the way we think, we will always know what we like.

People with lived experience of dementia are challenging negative assumptions about their ability. Research suggests that a gradual decline in cognitive function does not preclude the ability to learn new skills. An increasing reliance on sensory stimuli has been identified. Use of visual stimuli has been proven to support independence and orientation that can help to maintain a sense of competence. Visual communication offers an alternative means to express personal preferences and provoke engagement. Where a growing reliance on assistance has an impact on our choice and control everyday life.

This study explores how design can support the non-verbal expression of everyday aesthetic preferences. Investigating our relationships with domestic objects, colour preferences, in the context of home. Seeking alternative ways to support agency in the curation of personal space, at a time in life when we become increasingly reliant on others to make decisions on our behalf.
