Four reasons to consider postgraduate study at Hallam

Monday 10 February 2020

In today’s increasingly competitive job market there are a range of benefits that studying on a postgraduate course can offer. Here are four reasons why you should consider postgraduate study at Hallam:

1. Improve your job prospects. Stand out in a crowded graduate job market by increasing your knowledge or specialising in your chosen field while gaining a valuable qualification. For example, enrolling on a postgraduate marketing course could provide you with additional knowledge and skills, help you build your professional network and improve your employability. You can choose from a range of full time and part time taught courses that are available.

2. Lifelong learning. Postgraduate study doesn't just have to be about preparing you for the world of work. Research degrees will give you the independence to carry out original exploration of a chosen subject, and could lead towards a PhD and a career in academia. There are also professional research-based degrees available for those who are simply enthusiastic about learning or want to develop their knowledge and expertise.

3. Career change. If you feel like a change of direction or your undergraduate degree doesn't provide you with the required qualifications for your desired career path, then a professional postgraduate qualification, such as a PGCE or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) will help set you on your way. These are often intense, practical courses that will develop your knowledge and skills, preparing you for a particular line of work.

4. Alumni scholarships. Postgraduate degrees are an investment in your future, but for many the financial burden can be off-putting. However, if you have previously studied at Sheffield Hallam University you could qualify for a scholarship towards your postgraduate course fees, open to UK/EU and international graduates on most full-time and part-time courses. Scholarships include a £1,000 Postgraduate Taught Scholarship and 10% Postgraduate Research Scholarship.

If you would like to find out more about postgraduate study at Hallam, our next postgraduate open day is on Wednesday 26 February 2020.
