A celebration of design in Hong Kong

Monday 19 August 2019

Sheffield Hallam University has a rich heritage in the field of design, going right back to our roots in 1843, when the Sheffield School of Design was founded to provide skilled designers to support Britain's industry.

Now, 176 years later, the University will showcase its work on a global stage at a unique exhibition in Hong Kong. On Thursday 24th October, an alumni and stakeholder reception open to graduating students, partners and alumni, will launch the Sheffield Institute of Arts Graduate and Student Jewellery and Metal Work Exhibition. Held at the stunning Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) building, the exhibition will run until 23rd February 2020.

Hong Kong, like Sheffield, is well known for its skilled makers, and HKDI is a leading design school, committed to nurturing design talents. It is one of a number of international partnerships that the University has in order to create opportunities for students as a leading applied University.

The University offers a wide range of art and design courses that are based at HKDI. These courses are at the very heart of what Sheffield Hallam is, in a place where the demand for skilled makers is exceptionally high.

The exhibition takes place as our HKDI Class of 2019 graduates collect their degrees and the launch event will bring together these new alumni along with existing Hong Kong-based alumni.

Storytelling will be the theme for the exhibition, which will see 100 pieces of artisan jewellery and metal work pieces displayed, produced by 39 alumni, and in some cases students, of the University. Moreover, the exhibition’s designer, Tom Finn, is a former Sheffield Hallam student himself.

The University’s 24th October launch event marks the start of an exciting few months for design in Hong Kong, with Business of Design Week (BODW), of which the University is a lead partner, taking place from 2nd to 7th December 2019.

Organised by Hong Kong Design Centre, BODW brings some of the world’s most outstanding design masters and influential business figures to Hong Kong and provides a valuable platform for business and creative leaders to exchange ideas, network, and explore new business opportunities.

This year’s BODW is part of the GREAT British Design campaign - a year-long campaign organised by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, to showcase the very best of what Britain has to offer in order to encourage the world to visit, study and do business with the UK.
