Donations ease the transition to university
Do you remember how your story began?
For many of us, Sheffield Hallam University and its founding colleges are a special place where friendships were forged, memories were made, and our story began. Starting university is an exciting step towards creating your future, but for students who don’t have the support of their families, this new beginning can invoke fear and anxiety.
That is why we offered students estranged from their families a welcome pack to help them settle into university and embrace this new chapter in their lives.
Thanks to the compassion of our donors, the welcome pack consisted of a £100 high street voucher to help students purchase clothes and household essentials, a £50 Tesco voucher towards their first grocery shop, a £30 voucher to spend at the Students' Union and £25 on their university card to help students purchase books, course materials, and food and drinks at campus outlets.
‘Such a great contribution for those who are less fortunate. I was able to buy supplies for university with my gift voucher from Tesco and it contributed towards a food shop. I also bought some shoes for placement with my high street voucher! Thank you.’
Jamie, first year student
The students were also introduced to a named contact in the University and offered a comprehensive package of support to help them navigate university life. From dedicated career advice to wellbeing support, we are ensuring that our most vulnerable students have everything they need to focus on their education.
‘It made me feel more at ease and welcomed in Sheffield. Transitioning to university without any family assistance is daunting and difficult, but your help was amazing. I feel like I have people to talk to now'.
Sam, first year student
Thank you once again to all our generous donors for helping students like Jamie and Sam relieve their worries and enjoy their time at university.
