Date: Tuesday 15 June 2021
Time: 05.00 PM to 06.00 PM
Venue: Online

Alumni, students and supporters of Sheffield Hallam are invited to join the Department of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics for an insightful panel discussion exploring 'How STEM can contribute to a sustainable future in a post-pandemic world'.

The panel will be chaired by Dr Carolyn Griffiths, an influential engineer from the rail industry. From starting out on the shop floor as a trainee, Carolyn went on to found and lead the UK’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). Carolyn also presided over the Institution of Mechanical Engineering for 2017/18. Carolyn was senior maintenance engineer for the Mass Rapid Transit in Singapore, the engineering director at South Yorkshire Supertram and senior vice president for Adtranz in Berlin.

Carolyn is vocal in her support for change within the engineering profession and has used her platform to focus on the need to attract more young people to the engineering profession and, in particular, to make engineering more attractive to women.

Carolyn will be joined by Dr Mahesh de Silva - a technology leader with experience in managing the development of innovative products in a number of sectors including automotive, medical, telecoms and consumer electronics. Currently, Mahesh is the Engineering Manager at Biochrom, a global biotech company. During his time at Jaguar Land Rover he led a programme in the development of electric cars. He has also led major engineering programmes at Teledyne e2v, to develop state of the art industrial processing systems and space imaging products.

Our third panel member is Sheffield Hallam Alumnus Neil Stainton (Class of 1995 Systems Modelling) who is the UK Energy Management Director for ScottishPower, which is the UK arm of the Iberdrola group, one of the world’s largest utilities and the leading wind energy producer. Neil leads the team that supply the energy for ScottishPower customers and has worked on multi-million pound contracts with wind, solar and hydro energy suppliers.
