Part of the work of the NCSEM in Sheffield has been to co-locate clinical services and physical activity facilities to help people with a medical need to exercise more easily. As the research hub for the NCSEM, the AWRC works with clinicians, patients and health and care commissioners to better design services and identify innovations that can prevent and treat chronic disease.
International recognition for the NCSEM is demonstrated by its designation by the International Olympic Committee as a Research Centre for Prevention of Injury and Protection of Athlete Health - one of just nine around the world.
The NCSEM informs the AWRC and its partners of the technology needs of those at the interface between the clinical pathway and the provision of exercise facilities. It also provides ideal facilities for the completion of research and trials of technological interventions developed by the AWRC.
