Long COVID Research at the AWRC

Long COVID is a term used to describe ongoing symptoms that last more than three months after a COVID-19 infection.

These symptoms can include debilitating fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, sleep issues, and often an increase in symptoms after exertion (termed post-exertional symptom exacerbation or PESE). The Office for National Statistics estimates that 3% of the UK population have persistent symptoms after a COVID-19 infection, in some people these can last months or years.

The AWRC has been studying Long COVID since 2020, in partnership with people who have Long COVID. Studies include investigations into the biological mechanisms underlying Long COVID, development of resources to support people with their symptoms, and trials to test potential therapies.

RICOVR Unit

Based at the AWRC during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, RICOVR explored the role that physical activity could play in recovery. Through research and innovation, it provided evaluation and feedback to health and care services that were supporting people directly and indirectly affected by the disease. You can read about the work that was undertaken through the RICOVR unit here.
