Dr. Abdel-Karim Al-Tamimi of Sheffield Hallam University's Computing Department and Zero Waste Works have successfully completed their pioneering project on automating quality assessments (QA) for innovative low-carbon construction technologies utilising recycled materials. Co-funded by the UK’s Innovation agency, Innovate UK, this groundbreaking endeavour has yielded results with far-reaching implications for the construction industry's embrace of sustainable practices.
The project's primary objective was to develop an AI-powered solution capable of accurately assessing the quality of Recycled Steel Tyre Microfibres (RSTM) extracted from End-of-Service tyres. By harnessing machine learning techniques, the team has significantly improved the efficiency and reliability of evaluating the varied geometries of these recycled fibres, a crucial step towards their widespread adoption in reinforced concrete applications.
The successful incorporation of recycled fibres in construction not only reduces waste but also substantially mitigates CO2 emissions, aligning seamlessly with the UK's commitment to combat climate change and forge a sustainable future.
