With over 31,000 students, it is important that we engage with them on sustainability early on and throughout their university life.
Engaging with the student body
Students input into decisions at all levels at the University up to the Board of Governors, who make both strategic and financial decisions. This has an impact on our sustainability initiatives and how we embed them across the University.
We work with accommodation services, to provide key information through a SHUStart sustainability module. It is available for all students to complete upon arrival and provides and introduction to the university, facilities, services and values.
The sustainability team also takes part in welcome week campaigns and roadshows, and students are kept up to date throughout the year with latest campaigns through the Browzer online forum. There is also a student-led society 'Sustain' which work on projects including community engagement and food recycling.
The Students' Union
We meet with the Students' Union to share communications plans and undertake joint projects. The Union has its own sustainability credentials and continues to participate in the Green Impact scheme as it has done for the past five years, a key achievement was being named ‘Green Impact Students Union of the Year’ in 2015.
