Summary

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development), Richard works two days a week, focusing on leadership of the London campus, and oversight of the Place and Civic Engagement (PACE), Global Development and Partnerships (GDP) and Governance, Legal and Sector Regulation (GLSR) directorates. 

Until April 2024 Richard was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategy and Operations) with overall leadership of Professional Services. This role has now largely been superseded by Libby Wilson, as Interim Chief Operating Officer.

About

Richard joined Sheffield Hallam as Chief Operating Officer in November 2016. 

He has an extensive background in leading professional service functions in central government. Previous roles include serving as Director General for Strategy and Resources at the Department for Education, Director General for Finance and Corporate Performance at the Department for International Development (DFID), Director of Strategy and Resources at the Food Standards Agency Finance Director at DFID First Secretary (External Relations) at the UK Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels; and, as Private Secretary to Chris Patten, Lynda Chalker and Clare Short while they were in ministerial roles.

In addition to his current role, Richard is a member of the Brigantia Learning Trust and is a Trustee of Christian Aid.

Richard holds an MA in Law from the University of Oxford and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
