Summary

Tom Battey is a narrative designer whose work spans prose, interactive fiction and games design. He focuses on creating new ways to tell stories, whether that’s through text, hypertext, or immersive digital worlds. His recent work focuses on narrative game design, and he is currently Course Leader for BA(Hons) Game Design & Development.

About

My focus is on creating new ways to tell stories, whether that’s through text, hypertext, or immersive digital worlds. My previous work includes speculative fiction novels, immersive narrative projects both physical and digital, and videogame design. Past projects include collaborations with the British Library on immersive fiction adaptation, and working with heritage scholar on digital interpretation of historical narratives. 

My academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in Computer Animation, and I hold Masters degrees in Creative Writing and Games Design. I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning for Higher Education and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am currently undertaking a PhD programme by creative practice, exploring narrative design approaches to developing characters for videogames.

My research interests focus around narrative design for games, character design, and implementation of narrative methods in serious games.

I am currently undertaking a PhD by Creative Practice exploring narrative design approaches for character development in games. The working title is 'A narrative design approach to developing believable non-player characters in videogames'.
