Dr Theresa Baxter

Principal Lecturer

Summary

I qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1980 from Derby School of Occupational Therapy (now University of Derby).

I have held a range of posts clinically, managerially and in academia, and worked in the areas of older adult psychiatry, general medicine and surgery, older adults' rehabilitation, orthopaedics, orthotics and outpatients.

I previously taught at University of Derby 1993 -2003 and moved to Sheffield Hallam in July 2007 initially as programme leader for the Practice based learning programme in Occupational Therapy and latterly combining the role of Professional lead with this course leadership.

In June 2018 I stepped down from the professional lead role and I now provide support to practice education for the AHP department.

About

Following qualification in 1980 I worked at the Royal London Hospital in out-patients carrying out hand therapy, splinting and bracing.

During this time I had the opportunity to work alongside Maggie Ellis carrying out evaluations into thermoplastic fracture bracing. I then moved to Bethnal Green hospital where I became Head OT working in older adult rehabilitation. Subsequently I moved to be Head OT at Watford General Hospital, commissioning a new department and extending the service across both in and out patients. I then moved to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham becoming Deputy Manager and I worked in general medicine and out patients focusing on hand therapy and vocational rehabilitation.

In 1993 I moved into academia and became a lecturer at Derby university until 2003 when I moved back to clinical practice in Nottingham. During this time I worked in older adults' rehabilitation, older adults' community mental health and latterly took up the post of professional lead for OT in older adults mental health in Notts Healthcare Foundation Trust.

In 2007 the opportunity arose to become course lead for the BScOT practice based programme based in Lincolnshire, and in 2012 I was appointed to the role of professional lead for Occupational Therapy and Vocational Rehabilitation at Sheffield Hallam University. In June 2018 I stepped down from the professional lead role to focus on placement learning within the AHP department.
