Shane started his professional career as a footballer for Sheffield United and Chesterfield football clubs, as well as gaining youth caps for Northern Ireland. He then returned into education as a mature student, gaining numerous undergraduate and post graduate qualifications. Teaching then beckoned and he gained employment at a number of further education colleges, teaching on a range of A Level and BTEC courses, as well as higher education courses. In 2006 Shane gained employment at Sheffield Hallam University, where he is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Academy of Sport and Physical Activity.

Although Shane no longer plays football he has been involved in the game in a coaching capacity at various levels. He has coached for both the men's and women's football clubs at Sheffield Hallam University. He currently volunteers his time coaching for the Sheffield Schools Football Association, coaching age groups from under 11’s to under 15’s. Shane still likes to keep fit, enjoying running and cycling and can often be found in the hills of the peak district. His passions are anything to do with sport and physical activity, strongly believing that being active is a great way to keep the mind and body healthy.

Shane lectures in a variety of sport topic areas, ranging from applied practical pedagogy, sport science, health, to physical literacy. Shane likes to work with students in a collaborative way, providing innovative teaching sessions that engages students with the learning process. Shane believes it’s an honour to be part of the process that enables students to develop from year to year, to become well rounded, responsible and agile graduates that can themselves make a difference to others lives.
