Summary

I completed my PhD from Queen's University of Belfast in 2011. I was recipient of The Charles Parsons Energy Research Award from Science Foundation Ireland for my  PhD research.

Prior to joining Sheffield Hallam University as Senior Lecturer in September 2018, I was an Associate Professor at Abu Dhabi University (2017-2018) and Assistant Professor from 2012 to 2017.

My major research interests are in Renewable Energy Integration into Power Systems, Microgrids, Smart Grids, Power System Operation and Stability Analysis.

About

I did my BSc and MSc degrees in electrical engineering from University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan in 2006 and 2008 respectively and PhD in Electric Power Systems from Queen's University Belfast (QUB), UK, in 2011. I was recipient of The Charles Parsons Energy Research Award from Science Foundation Ireland for my PhD research.

Prior to joining Sheffield Hallam University as Senior Lecturer in September 2018, I was with Abu Dhabi University as Associate Professor (2017-2018) and Assistant Professor (2012-2017) where I have won 3 awards for excellence in teaching including one University Teaching Award for the academic year 2015-16.

I have secured research and equipment grants worth more than £125,000. I have published more than 30 research papers in prestigious international journals and conferences. My research interests are Power Systems modelling and simulation, Distributed Generation and integration into the grid, Smart Grids and Demand Side Management. 

I am an active reviewer for articles submitted to the prestigious journals of IEEE and IET related to Power and Energy. I am a senior member of IEEE and Member of IEEE Power and Energy Society.

Research

Dr Akmal has been working on Wind Power Integration and Support from the Demand Side. The recent research includes Microgrids, Smart Grids, Power System Operation and Stability Analysis.
