About

I qualified in 2005 as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) from Sheffield Hallam University, and I worked clinically for 10 years before joining the ODP team at Sheffield Hallam University in 2015 as a full time lecturer.

During my first three years as a qualified ODP I consolidated and honed my skills, whilst caring for patients in an adult setting. This provided the opportunity to acquire knowledge and experience of a wide range of differing specialities. Although I was relatively newly qualified, I realised quite early in my career that I also enjoyed supporting others, and in 2006 I undertook my mentorship course.

In 2008, I gained a senior role in a paediatric major trauma centre, undertaking on-call responsibilities, more complex care provision and some very challenging situations; and this lead to my deeper interest in paediatric care in the wider critical care setting. My passion for support and sharing continued and I commenced my MSc in Healthcare Education in 2013, whilst continuing to work full time. In 2013 I also secured the role of Clinical Educational Facilitator within the same paediatric trust.

Over previous years I had been given the opportunity to deliver lectures as an SVL at SHU, but in 2015 I secured a 6 month secondment opportunity as a lecturer. It was during this secondment period that I successfully secured a full time lecturer post.

Since starting as a lecturer I have taught on a variety of modules, these include: Fundamentals, Perioperative Practice, Research and Management, and the interprofessional modules. I have also undertaken the roles of module lead, placement lead, and admissions. Since joining SHU I have continued to maintain my registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

I have a keen interest on supporting students as they embark on university life, and throughout their educational journey. I work alongside the ODP course representatives to provide any necessary guidance and support.
