Summary
I have over 20 years experience teaching art and design, working with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds and in various settings. I've been a member of the Art and Design department here at SHU for about 7 years now. Before this, I trained as an Industrial Designer at Loughborough University, worked as a junior, then head graphic designer, trained as a specialist youth worker and then studied for a postgraduate qualification in secondary teaching. I took up my first teaching role in 2003 in Nottingham. In this role I became Key Stage three co-ordinator, was heavily involved with a local authority group for Assessment for Learning and became Second in Department of a specialist technology college. I then moved schools to become Head of Design and Technology, Science and Computer Technology at an integrated Special Needs School. I first came to Sheffield Hallam as a member of the Design and Technology Education Team in 2009, we trained teachers across both undergraduate and postgraduate routes. I made the move over to Art and Design in approximately 2016 and began teaching on the Extended Degree programme. Now I head up the Foundation Year in Art and Design and have been in the role since 2022. In between I completed a Masters in Education. To lead the Foundation year in Art and Design requires a deep understanding of core skills and knowledge for each one of our different degree routes. You have to be an expert teacher and continually adapt and assimilate to keep knowledge current and broad enough to cover all of the different design disciplines. I relish this challenge and the opportunity to meet new students every year. One of the best times of year is during the degree shows when I get to congratulate those students who have come through the foundation year for having completed their degree. Every student has a different story to tell, the Foundation Year is an opportunity for each and every one to find their own creative voice and transition confidently onto the degree they have chosen to study.
