Marc Duffy

Dr Marc Duffy PhD, PgCert (Research), BA (Hons), FHEA

Senior Lecturer

Summary

I am a former practitioner with management experience in heavy industry, aluminium, iron and steel-making. In industry, I travelled the world as a key account manager for Latin America's metals processing sector. This included frequent and prolonged periods working in Mexico, Venezuela and Spain, owing to my second language skills (Spanish). I also worked extensively in China, Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil, Belgium and Finland. I returned to Sheffield Hallam University in 2015 to complete a PhD at Sheffield Business School. I am now a Lecturer in Strategic Management, Enterprise and Change, with a focus on applied research (Business Studies Project), Sustainable and Responsible Business, and the Level 4 Course Leader for the Business Studies BA (Hons) degree. My research interests are centred around practical application (and usefulness) of research for business. The PhD was an investigation into the influencers of Organisational Commitment within Sheffield City Region's mid-sized business. I have worked with professional football and rugby clubs, heavy industry and import and export organisations to address this question, and worked with these to implement the results of the study. In its fourth year, I am part of the team responsible for organising the annual Business Studies Conference where students present their final year research projects (dissertations) to the wider Business School and apply their learning to the real world. I am interested in working with organisations interested in all areas of employee commitment, responsible and ethical business and research methods and would welcome PhD student applications in these areas.
