Dr Joe Glentworth MSc, MA
Lecturer in Environmental Management and Environmental Science
Summary
I am a lecturer in Environmental Management and Environmental Science at Sheffield Hallam University. I have a PhD in Planning and Environmental Management from the University of Manchester and have experience working in protected area management and landscape-scale nature recovery. My research focuses on the social and ecological implications of ecological conservation, restoration and rewilding in upland landscapes. I teach various undergraduate and postgraduate modules in environmental management and ecology.
About
Before becoming a lecturer and researcher, I worked for eight years in conservation and protected area management. This involved delivering conservation and habitat restoration projects and designing research and strategies for protected area management. I have experience in ecological sustainability and conservation issues ranging from habitat restoration, land use planning and protection, and implementation of land management for ecological sustainability. My PhD, "Can rewilding work for everyone?" focused on the social/cultural implications of upland rewilding at the University of Manchester (Planning and Environmental Management), working alongside the Moors for the Future Partnership. I have since been involved in many interdisciplinary research projects incorporating ecological and social science.

Research
My research focuses on understanding the practical barriers to addressing the biodiversity and climate crises through interdisciplinary approaches. My PhD focused on the social/cultural implications of upland rewilding at the University of Manchester (Planning and Environmental Management) working alongside Moors for the Future. I have since been involved in several research projects focusing on topics such as; Natural Flood Management, Nature Based Solutions (NBS), Shifting Baselines Syndrome, and the influence of recreation on upland ecosystems (Natural England Evidence Review).
Current research interests involve areas of rewilding and landscape ecology. I am working closely on projects related to Local Nature Recovery Networks and Biodiversity Net Gain.
