Summary

Clair Marlow is the University Secretary and Clerk to the Board of Governors at Sheffield Hallam University.

Clair provides overall leadership and direction for university governance, legislative and regulatory compliance and assurance, including Governance Services, Legal Services, Information Governance and Health and Safety, with accountability to the Vice-Chancellor, Chair of the Board and other University Executive Board colleagues. She is responsible for providing expert guidance and advice to the Board of Governors, University Executive Board and other senior corporate and academic governance structures to ensure that the University operates effectively and efficiently within the parameters of its governance, legal and regulatory responsibilities.

Clair joined Legal Services at Sheffield Hallam University in 2016 as a University Solicitor and was appointed as Head of Legal Services in 2019 before being appointed as Deputy University Secretary and Head of Legal Services in 2022.

Clair graduated with a Bachelor of Laws LLB, from Sheffield Hallam University in 1998, before completing her PG diploma in Legal Practice at Nottingham Trent University on a part-time basis. 

Clair’s professional career started in Sheffield at Graysons Solicitors where she qualified as a Solicitor in 2002, before moving to PM Law as an Assistant Solicitor and in 2004 on to Keeble Hawson (latterly HLW Keeble Hawson) where she became an Associate in 2011.

Clair developed a keen interest in governance through her role as a Governor and Director of a local primary school between 2013 and 2016 and as a Governor and latterly Chair of Governors at Handsworth Grange Community Sports College between 2018 and 2022 via the South Yorkshire Futures programme, supported by Sheffield Hallam University.
