New book exploring mobile literacies and presenting cutting-edge research into the relationships between tablets and meaning-making.
SIoE Professors Guy Merchant and Cathy Burnett have edited a collection published by Springer The Case of the iPad: Mobile Literacies in Education bringing together an international group of scholars working in literacy studies who have investigated mobile literacies in a variety of settings. The work builds on a well-received symposium at the 2015 American Educational Research Association conference in Chicago. Approaching mobility from diverse theoretical perspectives, the collection makes a significant contribution to how these new literacies are being conceptualised in literacy research. The book focuses on tablets, and particularly the iPad, as an instance – or case – of mobile literacies, but it is designed to speak more broadly to research focused on literacy and mobile devices.
This work builds on the research theme of 'Foundational 21st Century Literacies' and other publications by Cathy Burnett and Guy Merchant. It also follows on a successful webinar 'New Mobile Literacies' given by Guy for the Global conversations in literacy series (October 2015).
The book contributes to the impact of the Language and Literacy strand of the SIoE's research.
