Learning from UK-Sweden comparisons to understand the needs of young people identifying as LGBT+
This research comes at a time when increasing numbers of young people in the UK are being diagnosed with mental health issues, and where young people’s access to formal support or information about sex(uality) and relationships is limited, particularly in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT+) identities. This is in comparison to what are often perceived to be more liberal attitudes towards sex(uality) in Sweden.
This project aims to explore these different contexts with a particular focus on the needs of young LGBT+ people. We are using interviews, focus groups and vignettes in schools and youth work settings to explore how young people and those who work with them understand the needs of young people who identity as LGBT+ in the UK and Sweden. We will bring these data into dialogue, and in doing so explore what lessons can be learnt from different contexts.
