SHU launches Race Staff Network
Monday 16 July 2018
Sheffield Hallam University launched its Race Staff Network on 9 July 2018, with a keynote address by East Carolina University's Dr Ben Blaisdell, and workshops on the themes of mental health and race, whiteness in the Academy, and intersectionality, to inform the activities of the Network.
Sheffield Institute of Education's Dr Manny Madriaga participated in the launch alongside many SIoE colleagues. Manny reports:
"The event was encouraging for all involved. The event began with Professor Kevin Kerrigan, PVC for Enterprise and Sheffield Business School, welcoming attendees and emphasising the University’s commitment to social justice. Afterwards, Dr Ben Blaisdell who currently sits on the executive committee of the Critical Race Studies in Education Association (CRSEA) (based in the USA) shared his research findings with teaching staff in engaging in anti-racist work in education. His insight was challenging, forcing us to rethink education, our teaching and supporting of our students and staff colleagues, in engaging in anti-racist work."
