All courses in the Department of Computing have employer engagement embedded into them. Students will have opportunities in each year of study to work with employers on a range of projects and experiences. To support students completing employer led projects we have the state-of-the-art facilities found in industry such as specialised labs and workspaces fitted with industry leading software and hardware. In addition to the employer engagement that is embedded into the course all courses have the option for a student to apply for a paid one-year placement between their second and final years. Many of the students completing a one-year placement will return to that company as a graduate employee.  

A key measure of any university department’s employability success is the Graduate Outcome Survey which shows that over 75% of Department of Computing graduates were in Highly Skilled Employment or Further Study in the most recent survey. The Graduate Outcome Survey also shows our graduates working for a variety of employers across a range of sectors that reflect Sheffield Hallam’s diverse portfolio of courses. Our Cyber and Digital Forensics students are now working for SFO, Home Office and several Police Services while our Games Developers have gained work at Sumo Digital, Tanglewood and Tiny Rebel Games. Programming students have found developer roles at large well-known organisations such as CISCO, HSBC and Tesco Mobile as well as smaller niche employers like Alpine F1 Racing. As well as highly technical roles some graduates have gone on to work in business or consulting roles with the likes of Cap Gemini and Grant Thornton.
