Our facilities

Learning the theory of a subject is only the start. We know that for it to really make sense you need to apply it in a practical situation. That's why we give you a learning environment that's as close as possible to the real world.

You'll experience top class facilities including workshops in precision and model-making, our flight simulator, wind tunnel, automotive workshop, and our structural integrity, thermofluids and robotics labs.

You'll have access to a wide range of hardware and equipment, including computer-aided design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks, and analysis software such as Fluent, Abaqus and Matlab. Other specialist facilities include rapid prototyping equipment to create accurate prototypes of product designs from CAD-generated information and a 5-axis machining centre which completes the CAD/CAM cycle

But the most valuable resource you'll have is our dedicated and highly experienced team of 50 technical staff. These engineers, designers, IT experts and other specialists have a wealth of knowledge and expertise for you to draw from. They'll help you with the practical aspects of your course, whether solving a simple software problem, producing a complex engineering project or creating design work for an international exhibition.

Hertha Ayrton STEM centre

Our brand new £11 million Hertha Ayrton STEM Centre opened in 2017 to provide staff and students with cutting edge robotics, automotive and electrical laboratories, 11,500 sq/m of floor space for teaching and a stunning new atrium with exhibition space. It is located in a prominent position directly opposite Sheffield Station and is named after nineteenth century award-winning British engineer, mathematician and physicist, Hertha Ayrton.
